WIG QUESTIONS!
You only have to wear a wig liner under your wig if there is a reason for it.
1) You have a sensitive scalp
2) You sweat a lot and want to have something to absorb sweat
3) Your bio hair under your wig needs to be packed down.
There are many different types of liners in the market.
1) Fish Net - this is breathable and great for packing your hair in.
2) Nylon - this is the most uncomfortable. Traps heat but also packs your hair in.
3) Bamboo - this is the most breathable and comfortable
4) Cotton - just creates a barrier
Heat Friendly Synthetic wigs can be styled on a low heat setting. The fibre is usually finer and softer than regular synthetic. However, they are a challenge to style and if you do not apply heat to them the fibres frey a lot quicker than regular synthetic. Also if you curl them they do not go back to straight easily. This is my least favorite type of wig fibre.

Sleeping in your wig is the quickest way to damage and cause premature aging.
NO!
Swimming is not recommended in your wig. It will likely not stay on your head and exposing your wig or topper to unknown chemicals is not a good idea.
You can put the hair up and go in a pool or hot tub without putting your head under. If you must swim with a wig I would recommend getting an inexpensive wig to wear in the water.
You can wear a hat over a wig. Keep in mind it is not always the most comfortable and if your wig is synthetic it could cause excess friction which will prematurely age your wig.
There are hat wigs available in limited styles, I would recommend those if you plan to wear a hat frequently with your wig.
Synthetic wigs trap more heat than human hair. There are many lightweight wigs available in both human hair and synthetic wigs that help with the heat. Overall, when its hot outside, everyones hot whether they have a wig or not.
You can also look into wearing a hat wig during really hot days outdoors, they tend to be cooler since they do not have a top but you must wear them with a hat.
No, Synthetic wigs come pre colored and cannot be colored the same as human hair.
Syntheic wigs come in many color options so its rare someone cannot find a color match.
There are markers that you can use to color the strands but this is not common.
If the human hair wig still has a cuticle you will be able to color the wig. It is always best to darken the wig rather than bleaching.
NOTE: During the wig making process some factories remove the cuticle of the hair, and textile dye these wigs. These wigs will be challenging and un predictable when coloring. It is best to ask what type of hair you are purchasing to know if you will be able to safely color the wig at a later date.
If you have a prescription from a medical doctor for a wig then you will able to submit your receipt to your insurance provider for re-embursment. It is also recommended to check with them before you purchase to find out how much they cover.
Wigs are worn for many reasons.
The main reasons are:
1) Fashion
2) Alopecia
3) Hair Thinning
4) Hair loss due to chemotherapy
In the market there are many types of wigs.
Costume - Disposable maybe able to be worn one or two wears. Halloween etc...
Fashion - Generally low quality, worn for fun
Medical - Made to disguise hair loss. Inovative cap, hand sewing, more confort, beautiful colors, wide range of common colors, thinner syntheic strands that move and feel more like human hair. Available in both synthetic and human hair.
YES!
Synthetic wigs come in grey colors and although everyone has their own personal pattern of grey you will be pleasantly surprised at how close you can match your grey with a synthetic wig.
Human hair wigs are not generally made with grey color. When they are they use human hair for the dark color and synthetic or YAK for the white.
A topper is essentially a partial wig. Instead of covering your whole head it integrates with your existing hair. It sits on top of your head and clips onto your bio hair. The color match must be good and the length close to your hair in order for it to blend.
A topper is designed for someone with mild to moderate hair loss. You need some bio hair in order to wear a topper. A topper is more lightweight than a wig and often times a great option for someone with thinning hair.
We recommend washing your wig or topper anywhere from every 14 to 30 wears. You can usually tell it needs washing as it doesn't flow as freely as it does when it is freshly washed.
Alternative hair is dead and in need of supplemental oil. It is important to care for your human hair wigs and toppers carefully and correctly to get the most longevity from your piece.
Since no head is the same the wig caps are general in size. Everyone likes a different fit of their wig, so sometimes we must made adjustments in order to find the right fit for us.
1) Wear a grip band under your wig this will prevent the wig from moving around.
2) Sew clips or combs into your wig if you have some bio hair to prevent the wig form moving around.
3) Spray some hair spray on your biohair to make it less slippery under a wig.
It is common to have a sensive scalp as a side effect of chemo. You can try to hydrate your scalp with lotion, or coconut oil.
There is also scalp care kits available to sooth the skin. Check out our Chemotherapy page for more details.
You should always advise your oncology doctor or nurse if the problem persists or is unmanageable.
The area that has freyed will have to be cut, thinned or trimmed in order to correct the appearance. Nothing will take the fraying away, but it can look better after it is trimmed.
It is common to be nervous to wear our new hair to work, but we need to realize that most people aren't really noticing us or our hair. Most of the time when we return to work it is much easier than we anticipated. Here are a few tips to try:
1) Wear your new hair after a vacation or long weekend.
2) Wear it in a different style, a pony, with a headband etc for a few days before the full reveal.
3) Get your new wig/topper in a different color, sometimes people just think whats different is the color changed.
This means someone really likes your new style thats a compliment!
If you have not revealed to them that you "wear" hair then you can always say you had your hair done by someone out of town or that your stylist isn't accepting new clients.
If you are comfortable, you can offer to let them take a photo of your hair so they can use it as a reference for their stylist to match it.

It is imperative that you use synthetic safe products to wash and style your synthetic wigs. They have a silicone coating that keeps them moving like hair and non safe products will remove this and frizz your wig over time.
A rooted wig color is a nice touch to a wig. Most people have darker roots inbetween their coloring service so wig manufacturers have mimicked this as another added touch to help make wearing hair look as natural as bio hair.
Modern synthetic fibre is very fine and soft and can move similarly to human hair. Here are a few benefits to consider when purchasing synthetic.
1) Less expensive than human hair
2) Color does not fade the same as human hair
3) More options available as far as colors and styles
4) Comes prestyled so after washing it maintains its look
High quality Human hair wigs can be a great option.
Here are a few benefits to consider when purchasing high quality human hair.
1) A good quality and well taken care of human hair wig can be worn for years
2) You can cut and color it to suit your personal style
3) Hair quality can be even nicer than your bio hair
4) You can curl and change the style more than synthetic
5) Human hair wigs trap less heat than synthetic
6) The movement of the hair and feel on your skin is more natural
7) An amazing quality human hair wig does not tangle making longer hair styles preferred over synthetic

We do not recommend using this glue with any wig we sell in salon.
If you want to make your bio hair or scalp more tacky so your wig/topper feels more secure try BED HEAD HARD HEAD hairspray.
Got2Be glue is too sticky and can pull out the fine hairs that are knotted in cause execessive hair loss of your piece.
Realize that social media is not reality. Sometimes things look amazing on video or photo but in reality are different and even unrealistic.
There is no "best wig".
Wigs are such an individual choice that there is a perfect wig for each person but no one wig that is perfect for every person.
It all depends on need, budget, length, color, and style.
Once you know your budget, need and desired style we can help you find the best options.
Lace front is a sewing technique used at the front hair line of a wig to mimic a natural hairline. Lace front comes in many different materials, welded, swiss, french, korean etc.
Each material has its own characteristics and the hairline can vary from factory to factory and color to color. No two are the same.
Monofilament is a sewing technique used on the scalp of a wig. It is durable and most commonly found on synthetic wigs.
Lace top is a sewing technique on the scalp and front hairline. It is less durable than monofilament and one of the fastest of the sewing techniques which makes it widely available but arguably not the most natural as it has exposed knots and a lot of short return hairs.
This sewing is most often found in fashion human hair wigs.
Skin top is a sewing technique that is the most labour intensive and expensive but has the best longevity if done by hand. (Beware of machine skin top). The knots are hidden and return hairs are glued under the top layer making for what I think is the most natural and durable top of a wig.
This sewing is only found in human hair.
Remy hair is a term used all over the world and sadly means different things to different people.
This makes for a confusing customer experience.
Generally REMY means the hair cuticle of a human hair piece is in the correct direction. Often times this was done from temple hair that was not in the correct direction but a machine sorted the hair (to its limited capability) to make it correct. The hair shaft likely did suffer some damage in the process. This hair could be colored with some degree of perdictability and will tangle somewhat less than completely non remy hair.
However, braided hair is best.
A massive step up from REMY is braided hair. This hair was sold as braid and the factory maintained the cuticle direction during the entire production process.
This hair will tangle much less than remy and non remy hair.
This is the only hair we sell at The Hairapy Shop as after much testing remy and non remy hair is too problematic.
